According to the “Hachimensan Engi”, in the first year of the Taiho era (701 A.D), Hachiman Great Bodshisattva had came back after travelling to a faraway land when he got into an argument with a monk at Mount Hiko over the transfer of the Cintamani stone.

It is said that this is the megalith he was on when he reconciled (“wayo” in Japanese) with the monk. From this, Wayo-ishi is considered to be a great god who is made of stone.
