Rakanji Temple is located on the side of the rough and wild yet somewhat mysterious Mt. Rakan, and many legends about its creation have been passed down. One can tell that the area has been a major location for mountain training since olden times. In the first year of the Rakuo era (1338 A.D.), the Zen priest Engan Shougaku founded the temple. Rakanji Temple, in contrast to the foot of this world, is a symbol of the next life. Visitors can deeply experience the teachings of Buddhism as they walk the old stone-paved path and pass countless stone Buddha statues, natural stone bridges, and caves along the way.
