This shrine has its beginnings in Keicho 6, when the feudal lord of Mori and Murakami Suigun descendent Kurushima Yasuchika prayed for the coming of Mishima Shrine, which is the deity of his hometown, the Iyo province. In the later half of the Edo period, the feudal lord Kurushima Michihiro longed to have a castle of his own, and decided to make a shrine that was a shrine only in name; it would be grand and impressive so as to resemble a castle itself. The Shimizu Gomon gate would not be out of place in a castle, and the stone wall of multiple layers is accompanied by the Seihoro that stands tall like a castle tower, all of which add to the grand fantasy. The daimyo’s yearning is also visible in the gardens, where the shrine and encampment site seem to become one.
