The Yabakei lava plateau rises up like a table and supports this mountain as it slopes gently northwest. Its summit, “The Nose of Shouke”, lies on the southeastern corner of the plateau and is 2162 feet (659 meters) high. The mountain has been named “Hachimen”, due to the fact that it seems to look the same from every angle.
It is said that many ascetics undertook harsh self-disciplinary practices at the “Waterfall of Ascetics” that runs through Mt. Hachimen. Several megalithic structures can also be found across the summit, thought to be deeply connected to religion.
