岩洞山久福寺は、霊亀二年（716）に仁聞菩薩が自作の観音像を岩窟に安置し、僧法蓮が開山して第一世となったと伝わります。開基は下毛郡擬大領であった蕨野勝宮守という人物で、妻子刀自売とともに境内に供養塔が建てられています。寺の上にそびえる岩峰が観音菩薩の姿に見えることから補陀落岩と呼ばれています。

It is said that in the second year of the Reiki era (716 A.D.), Ninmon Bodhisattva enshrined a Kannon statue that he had made in a cave. A monk later founded a temple there, now known as the Gandosan Kyufukuji Temple.
The founder is Warabino no Suguri Miyamori, who was the dairyo of the Shimoge District at the time. A memorial tower has been erected inside for him and his wife Tojime. The rocky peak towering above the temple is also called the Potalaka Rock, since it resembles Kannon Bodhisattva.
