A tale has been passed down that goes as follows: Upon resisting after entering Nakatsu, Utsunomiya Shigefusa was murdered at Nakatsu Castle by Kuroda Kanbei and the Nagamasa father and son. His 12 female attendants managed to run away as far as this area, but were eventually caught lost their lives at the hands of pursuers sent by Kuroda. People felt sorrow over this turn of events, and erected a shrine to console the deceased ones’ spirits. In the fall, the maples lining both sides of the pathway blush red and a carpet of leaves is rolled over the road to the shrine.
