周囲が山に囲まれた玖珠盆地はその昔「陸の孤島」と呼ばれていました。明治19年、当時の玖珠郡長・村上田長は地元有志を募って、玖珠の産業発展を願い中津玖珠道の整備に取り組み、度重なる困難の末に明治24年道は完成。玖珠は中津の後背地としても発展していきます。その関連資料は村上医家史料館に展示されています。

In the surrounding area lies the Kusu Basin, encircled by mountains, which used to be called an “isolated land” long ago. In Meiji 19, the head of Kusu District, Murakami Dencho, gathered volunteers from the area and began to take measures for the establishment of the Nakatsu-Kusu Road, in hopes of promoting Kusu’s industrial development. After a long period entwined with countless difficulties, the road was finally complete in Meiji 24. Kusu continues to develop as Nakatsu’s hinterland. Related documents and materials are on display at the Murakami Medical Museum.
