昔、山国川を挟んだ日田代官道（戸原側）と中津藩道（平田側）は、夏は渡し舟、秋冬春は仮橋が架けられて往来していました。しかし、仮橋は山国川の増水の度に流され、その都度修復されていました。大正3年に竣工された下城井橋も大正11年に流出したため、翌年、現在の石積みアーチ式の橋が架けられました。

In olden times, people used to travel across the Yamakuni River between Hitadaikan Road (Togawa side) and Nakatsu Road (Hirata side) by ferry during the summer and by a temporary bridge in other seasons. However, the rising waters of Yamakuni River would always wash away the bridge, and every time a new one would be built in its place. The Shimokii Bridge built in Taisho 3 was also swept by the currents in Taisho 11, leading to the present arching stone bridge being built the next year.
