福澤諭吉は、耶馬溪を訪れた際に競秀峰の山々が売却されることを耳にし「万一、心ない人に渡り天下の絶景が損なわれては取り返しがつかない」 と自分の名を表に出さず、複数の土地所有者から一帯の土地を少しずつ購入し開発の危機から守りました。その証拠となる「福澤家土地台帳」は、福澤記念館で展示されています。
福澤記念館の改装に伴い、下記期間は福澤諭吉旧居・福澤記念館を休館しています。

While Fukuzawa Yukichi was visiting Yabakei, he caught wind that the mountains of Kyoshusho were going to be sold. He thought to himself that this would be an irrepairable decision should they be sold to a heartless man and lose their unparalleled beauty. He then moved into action and hid his identity while buying pieces of land one by one in order to protect the area from urbanization. Evidence of these purchases are found in the Fukuzawa Family Cadastre, displayed in the Fukuzawa Yukichi Memorial Hall.
