平田家住宅は大分県を代表する近代和風住宅で、耶馬渓の名勝指定にも貢献した平田吉胤の住宅です。大正年間に耶馬溪を訪れる人々をもてなすために三階を増築し、耶馬渓の迎賓館的な建物として、利用していたと考えられています。かつて平田家の土地であった山々が窓越しに障壁画のように広がっています。

This building is one of Oita Prefecture’s most famous spots, and is a renowned example of modern Japanese-style housing. It was the residence of Hirata Yoshitane, who also happened to contribute to Yabakei’s being selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan. It is thought that three additional stories were built as a kind of guest house to accommodate travellers who came to visit Yabakei during the Taisho era.
The mountains that were formally part of the Hirata property are visble from the windows like an intricate wall painting.
