It is a local folk dance passed down through the ages with roots that go as far back as approximately 300 years ago. The needless, worldy thoughts of the fallen Taira members, who were being pursued by the Seiwa Genji, manifested as mischievous kappas; in order to console them, this ritual is performed to the local deity to ward off evil spirits and pray for abundant harvest. It is also called the Kappa Dance. The dance has been kept alive at Yabakei by the local preservation society, who perform and pass it down at three shrines.
